ROLES AND MISSIONS OF NAVAL/MARITIME MUSEUMS:(To be developed)
Maritime and naval museums often also house important archives of documents that exist nowhere else. These documents often not only inform our views of maritime, naval, national, and world history, they often contain descriptions of bygone technologies. These descriptions have been used in the construction of historic models and full sized replicas. Such museums maintained documents have also occasionally been used to gain insights into modern day improvements on old technologies. Equally important naval and maritime museums maintain collections of maritime artifacts displaying past technologies in three dimensions, often fully functional. These are priceless contributions to human knowledge.

Unfortunately very few naval or maritime museums receive government funding or or are the recipients of generous endowments. Many are struggling, most are highly worthwhile. American Admiralty Books urges our readers and visitors to visit such museums when in the vicinity of one, to donate, and support these institutions in any way possible. If you are fortunate enough to have one in your immediate neighborhood consider volunteering. Maintaining the global maritime heritage is not a centralized effort and it receives precious little support from governments. However, while the museums are not a centrally organized preservation effort they do cooperate as much as possible and are aided by groups that catalog and document their efforts.
